Choosing a Pool Type for Your Katy Backyard

Comparing pool types for a Katy backyard

Every pool project starts with the same fork in the road: gunite, fiberglass, or vinyl-liner. After decades of building in Katy backyards, we can tell you there is no single right answer, only the right answer for your yard, your budget, and how your family swims. Here is how we help homeowners think it through.

Start With How You Will Use It

A pool built for laps and a pool built for a couple of kids and a spillover spa are not the same project. If you want a specific shape, a deep end, a tanning ledge, or a vanishing edge, gunite is the only build type that bends fully to your ideas. If you mostly want water in the ground fast with low upkeep, a molded shell may serve you better. We ask about the swimming before we ever talk materials.

Weigh Cost Against Lifespan

First cost and long-term cost pull in different directions. Vinyl-liner pools run the lowest to build, roughly $35,000 to $65,000, but the liner needs replacing every 7 to 12 years. Fiberglass lands in the middle and asks very little of you afterward. A custom gunite pool starts around $60,000 and climbs, but a pebble interior can go 15 to 25 years before it needs attention. Cheapest to build is rarely cheapest to own.

Factor In Your Lot and Access

Katy lots vary a lot from one neighborhood to the next. A one-piece fiberglass shell has to physically reach the backyard, which means a crane and a clear path, so a tight side yard near Peek Road can rule it out. Gunite is shot in place, so access matters less. We walk the lot early and flag any of this before it becomes a surprise on install day.

Do Not Skip the Structural Details

Whatever type you pick, the parts you never see decide how long the pool lasts. The rebar cage, the deck slope, and the equipotential bonding grid are where corners get cut by low bidders. Ask any builder how they handle those, and ask to see a finished job. An older pool with a tired surface is often a great candidate for a resurface and remodel rather than a full replacement.

Talk to a Builder Before You Decide

The fastest way to clarity is a walk of your own yard with someone who has built all three types nearby. We will lay out the real trade-offs for your space and hand you honest ranges, then let you sit with it. When you are ready, contact us and we will get you on the calendar.
